In Asian culture, it is completely normal to critique someone’s physical appearance. I was nine, visiting Korea for the first time, when my father’s sister nonchalantly pointed out, “your stomach is bigger than your breast”. Every adult in the room laughed. That short exchange would be the start of my relatives’ constantly picking apart and criticizing my appearance: everything from my height, to my skin to my weight was up for grabs, and available for judgement.
